Mesquite Trees

The story of MannaBrew begins in South Africa, deep in the heart of the Karoo in the small town of Prieska. Here, along the banks of the Orange River, farmlands are impacted by thousands of wild Mesquite trees (Prosopis glandulosa). While locally considered an invasive species, one pioneering family discovered that the deep-yellow seedpods growing on these trees are actually a rich source of natural nutrients and flavor.

Harvesting

Through 26 years of experience working with Mesquite trees, brothers Aam and Brandt Coetzee discovered that these wild seedpods could be transformed into a delicious, nutrient-rich beverage.

Each year, a narrow window of just 2 to 3 weeks allows for the harvesting of the entire year’s supply before the summer rains begin. This short harvest period creates essential seasonal opportunities and brings vital support to local families in this remote Karoo region.

Job creation

For the local population, this harvest represents a valuable opportunity to gather wild pods in the field, which are purchased based on the weight collected. This initiative provides vital seasonal employment and actively supports the local economy. Each pod is meticulously hand-sorted to guarantee premium quality before being weighed, packaged, and transported to Somerset West in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

Processing

Processing

When the pods arrive at the MannaBrew facility, they undergo a final quality inspection before being carefully roasted, milled, and blended. The ground consistency is optimized for versatile preparation using most standard brewing methods, including espresso filters, French press, or moka pots.

To preserve freshness, the product is packaged in specially designed, fully recyclable bags that ensure a long shelf life. The gentle, slow-roasting process naturally enhances the subtle sweetness and rich, comforting flavor profile of these wild-harvested seedpods. Now, it is ready to be enjoyed!

The “Coffee”

The Beverage

MannaBrew is naturally caffeine-free. The natural sugars from the Mesquite seedpods offer a smooth, revitalizing taste experience that invigorates your routine without the jittery side effects of caffeine. Once you taste MannaBrew, ordinary beverages simply cannot compare.

The Numbers Tell The Story

Stopping the Spread of Mesquite Trees

Stopping the Spread

Each 226g box of MannaBrew contains an average of 75 Mesquite seedpods, representing approximately 1,125 seeds. Research shows that about 35% of these seeds can germinate within their first year. By harvesting these pods, every box of MannaBrew helps prevent up to 393 new invasive trees from taking root in valuable agricultural land over the following year — a positive ecological impact that compounds exponentially over time.

Saving Water

Saving Water

An average Mesquite tree (2.5 to 3.5 meters high) consumes approximately 60 liters of water per day. By controlling the growth of these invasive trees, every box of MannaBrew contributes to preserving millions of liters of vital underground water reserves each year.

Creating Jobs

Currently, around one thousand people participate in the annual harvest. Every effort matters, as the local unemployment rate in the Northern Cape, where the Mesquite seedpods are harvested, remains significantly high.

With every cup of MannaBrew, you enjoy a naturally invigorating beverage while supporting ecological preservation in the Northern Cape and making a tangible difference in the lives of local harvesting families.

The Purity and Integrity of MannaBrew

Pure & Natural

MannaBrew is crafted from wild-harvested Mesquite seedpods that grow naturally in pristine environments, completely untouched by synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or chemical additives. Enjoying MannaBrew brings pure peace of mind.

Naturally Nutritious

Because our Mesquite pods grow wildly in their natural habitat, they retain their inherent nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants, contributing to your daily well-being.

Sustainable Harvesting & Social Impact

Harvesting wild Mesquite seedpods is an active ecological effort. Controlling this invasive tree species helps conserve scarce groundwater and protect valuable farmland. Furthermore, this sustainable practice supports local South African communities by creating fair, ethical job opportunities.
